City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare (2007)

Genre: Speculative Fiction
Interest level: Ages 14 to Adult
City of Bones This is the first in the Mortal Instruments quartet (I think it’s going to stay at four). Ideal for fans of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series, but SO much better! This female protagonist has ovaries! She’s sassy and funny, not afraid to say what she thinks, brave and loyal, even when she’s afraid of the truth. Like Harry Potter, this involves a supernatural world hidden behind a glamour so “mundanes” (think muggles) can’t see the truth. Also like HP, the teens are trying to defeat an evil power, and adults are usually helpless or malevolent, with a couple of benevolent Dumbledore-types to step in when needed. It does get a little violent, and characters die, so not suitable for younger readers. There’s also a bit of romantic tension, putting it clearly in the young adult realm. Most enjoyable.

About Michelle Mallette
I'm just trying to keep track of the books I've read - what I liked and what isn't worth re-reading. My work as a librarian has included youth services so you'll find a wide range of interests from picture books and teen dystopia to adult sci-fi, road trip novels, and nonfiction. Comments and communication is always welcome.
